Our own Alfalfa Mix is a suitable addition to the daily ration for many horses. It is widely used as a source of fibre to mix with the concentrate feed. Horses will eat slower when alfalfa is mixed with the concentrate feed, so horses chew their feed better and produce more saliva which improves digestion and nutrient absorption.
Alfalfa is a crop with low sugar and high protein content. Therefore, molasses has been added to our Alfalfa Mix so that horses that find ordinary alfalfa harder to eat will prefer this mix.
For our Lucerne Mix we only use coarse French Alfalfa for an optimal structure and a high munching factor.
With the extra addition of straw, our mix contains an extra source of crude fibre, which greatly benefits digestion.
Also the addition of straw, our mix contains an extra source of crude fibre which greatly benefits digestion.
Also the addition of corn barley flakes is an extra source of energy and slow sugars. This also eliminates the lopsided calcium-to-phosphorus ratio present in alfalfa. This ratio is very important for magnesium absorption which ensures smooth muscle mass.
Alfalfa Mix is extremely suitable for young growing horses, sport horses, lactating mares and older and lean horses. These can very well use the extra energy and nutrients.
The amount you should give daily depends on the protein content in your roughage, what you want to achieve and what kind of horse you have. If you only give a few handfuls as a supplement to the concentrate, you will only stimulate chewing. If you really want to give extra energy and protein, it is necessary to feed an adult horse of 600 kg at least 1.5 - 3 kg of alfalfa. Always supplement alfalfa Mix with quality roughage and fresh water.
